What Is Spray Foam Insulation?

Spray foam insulation is designed to keep heat in your home for longer, increasing your home’s energy efficiency. The beauty of spray foam insulation is that it comes out as spray, but then sets hard, meaning it can reach all the gaps that other insulation types just can’t.

There are two main types of spray foam:

Open-Cell Spray Foam

Designed to be much softer, open-cell spray foam has some spring to it, and whilst it’s not quite as effective as the other main type of spray foam, it is cheaper to install. It will still help you save on your energy bills by improving your home’s thermal efficiency.

Closed-Cell Spray Foam

Closed-cell spray foam is much more rigid than open-cell when it sets, making it incredibly efficient. Because of its harder setting, it’s much more resistant to moisture, too. Its greater thermal efficiency makes it a popular choice, even with its higher upfront cost.

What Is The Great British Insulation Scheme For Spray Foam Insulation?

The Great British Insulation Scheme replaced ECO+ and started in summer 2023 and is set to end until March 2026, where £1 billion of government grants and funding will be on offer to low income households in poor performing homes in terms of their energy efficiency.

The scheme works by obligating the largest energy suppliers (those with 150,000+ customers) to offer grants and support to their customers who are living in energy inefficient homes and struggling to pay their high energy bills.

As part of this scheme, government grants for spray foam insulation are available, since they’re great at improving the EPC rating of homes.

Do I Qualify For The Great British Insulation Scheme?

You ought to qualify for the Great British Insulation Scheme if you’re:

  • Living in a home with an EPC rating of D-G, AND
  • Living in council tax band A-D in England, A-E in Scotland and Wales

  • Receiving means tested benefits AND
  • Living in a home with an EPC rating of D or below

The top criteria means you would qualify for the general group. And the bottom criteria means you would qualify for the low-income group.

How Does 0% VAT On Insulating Materials Help Me?

The UK government has applied 0% VAT on all Energy Saving Materials in the UK – and this applies to cavity wall insulation, too. First introduced in April 2022, 0% VAT on insulation is set to last until the end of March 2027.

This is automatically applied on any qualifying purchase, so you don’t have to apply through a scheme or anything – you just get to enjoy cheaper cavity wall insulation, which will help stretch those government grants even further.
