Are Solar Panel Grants in Wales Available?

Solar panels capture daylight, converting it into renewable energy that lowers reliance on fossil fuels, reduces energy bills, and reduces carbon footprints. Wales is committed to renewable energy — targeting 70% renewable generation by 2030 as part of the wider UK goal under the net zero strategy — and this has seen a rise in solar farms to support the target.

Complete our simple form, and we’ll contact you and provide you with help regarding available grant options. Each grant has its own requirements, so if you need help understanding the criteria, reach out to ZOA Energy Solutions today for personalised guidance.

What are the benefits of Solar Panels?

What Solar Panels Grants are Available in Wales?

  • Lower Energy Bills – Reduces monthly electricity costs.
  • Increases Property Value – Solar installations boost home resale value.
  • Low Maintenance – Minimal upkeep is needed after installation.
  • Environmental Benefits – Decreases carbon footprint with clean energy.
  • Energy Independence – Less reliance on grid electricity.
  • Eligible for Incentives – Access to tax credits and rebates.

In Wales, solar grants and energy-efficiency incentives aim to make renewable energy more accessible for households, particularly those with low incomes or energy-inefficient properties. Key programmes include the ECO4 scheme, which focuses on providing solar panels and other energy-saving upgrades to eligible households. This scheme is open to homeowners and private renters in qualifying areas and is geared toward reducing energy costs and carbon emissions by offering full or partial funding for solar installations

Additionally, schemes like Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) and 0% VAT are also incentives to encourage solar adoption.

Are Solar Panels Efficient in Wales?

Solar panels in Wales are highly efficient, especially with optimal setup. A well-positioned 4kW system, especially using high-quality monocrystalline panels oriented southward, can reach around 22% efficiency and save an average household up to £660 annually. South Wales, with more sunlight than North Wales, enjoys a slight efficiency edge.

To give you an indication of how much sunshine is experienced in Wales, in May 2023, Wales had around 245 hours of sunshine, 128% of its usual average, surpassing the UK average, and boosting solar performance significantly.

Factors such as panel orientation, installation quality, system size, and household energy requirements remain crucial to solar panel effectiveness. However, overall, solar panels offer cost-effective, sustainable energy in Welsh regions.

How Much Do Solar Panels Cost?

In Wales, solar panel costs vary widely, influenced by system size, brand, and installation complexity. Prices in the UK generally range from £2,500 to £10,500. Estimated costs by system size include:

  • 2-3kW (1-2 bedrooms): £4,500 – £5,500
  • 4-5kW (2-3 bedrooms): £7,500 – £8,500
  • 6kW (4-5 bedrooms): £9,500 – £10,500

Final costs may vary with battery inclusion, supplier choice, and installation factors.

What is the ECO Grant Scheme for Solar Panels in Wales?

The ECO (Energy Company Obligation) Grant Scheme in Wales supports low-income households by helping fund energy-efficient upgrades like solar panels.

Now in its fourth phase, ECO4, this programme is especially targeted toward homes with an EPC rating of D or lower and focuses on reducing fuel poverty while contributing to national carbon reduction goals.

Statistics show that homes with solar panels can cut energy bills by 50-70%. Funding for ECO4 is provided by the main energy suppliers, including British Gas, E.ON, and EDF, as part of their obligation to assist in providing home energy efficiency upgrades.

Available through March 2026, ECO4 grants can cover partial or full installation costs, depending on household eligibility, making renewable energy more accessible to those most in need.

ECO4 Eligibility Criteria

You will likely qualify for ECO grants in Wales if you are a low-income household i.e. your household earns less than £31,000 per year, total.

The grant covers the entire cost of the installation as long as it’s below £10,000. If the cost is higher because you need a larger solar array at home, then you will need to pay the remainder.

The full list of eligibility criteria is below. To qualify, you’ll need to meet one of these criteria first:

  • You or a household member (or tenant) currently receives government assistance.
  • Your home has an inefficient heating system, with an energy efficiency rating between D and G.

Some Additional Schemes

In addition to the main ECO4 grant, there are other schemes or incentives to encourage solar energy adoption in Wales. Here’s a look at a few key initiatives that offer financial incentives and cost-saving benefits for solar panel installations.

1) Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) allows Welsh solar energy producers to sell excess electricity back to the grid. This scheme, mandatory for energy suppliers with over 150,000 customers, offers payments for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) exported, ranging from 3p to 5.5p/kWh depending on the provider.

Eligibility is limited to those with certified solar PV systems of up to 5 MW capacity, and applicants must have a smart metre for accurate measurement. SEG provides an income stream for homeowners, though the fluctuating rates mean it’s essential to research and select competitive tariffs. Statistics reveal that homes utilising SEG save an average of £150 annually, incentivising clean energy adoption in Wales.

2: 0% VAT on Solar Panels

In Wales, the 0% VAT relief on solar panels, introduced in 2022, aims to make renewable energy more accessible by reducing upfront costs. Homeowners and businesses installing solar panels, battery storage, or other energy-efficient solutions benefit from this tax exemption.

While available to most residential installations, commercial entities must meet specific criteria to qualify. This tax relief can lead to immediate savings of up to £1,000 on average installations, making solar adoption a more affordable and attractive option. According to recent surveys, this incentive has encouraged a 15% increase in residential solar panel installations in Wales since its implementation.
