Solar Panel Grants in Scotland
If you’re a homeowner in Scotland, installing solar panels can help you significantly cut down on energy costs by generating your own electricity. This can be especially appealing given the rising cost of living, and it’s a step towards supporting a cleaner environment with renewable energy.
You might think Scotland’s climate and weather conditions mean that solar panels aren’t effective, but that’s a misconception. While your output may not match sunnier places like southern Europe, you can still reduce your electricity bills by more than half.
You’d be joining a growing trend. Solar Energy UK projects that the country’s solar capacity will more than triple by 2030.
This growth is driven by falling solar panel costs and the Scottish government’s support, which makes it easier for residents to adopt solar technology.
Complete our simple form, and we’ll contact you with available grant options. Each grant has its own requirements, so if you need help understanding the criteria, reach out to ZOA Energy Solutions today for personalised guidance.
What are the benefits of Solar Panels? | What Solar Panels Grants are Available in Scotland? |
| Among the grants available, ECO4 and Warmer Homes Scotland offer direct funding for solar panels in Scotland, covering part of the installation costs in the UK. Other programmes reduce expenses differently. For instance, the 0% VAT policy lowers the cost of an average 4kW solar system by approximately £2,850. While this isn’t a cash grant, it effectively cuts the market price through a tax reduction from suppliers. Similarly, the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) doesn’t contribute toward purchasing panels but can allow you to earn from your solar energy. By selling excess electricity back to the grid, you can potentially shorten the payback period on your investment, assuming you generate surplus energy. |

ECO4 Eligibility Criteria
You will qualify for ECO grants in Scotland if you are a low-income household i.e. your household earns less than £31,000 per year, total.
The grant covers the entire cost of the installation as long as it’s below £10,000. If the cost is higher because you need a larger solar array at home, then you will need to pay the remainder.
The full list of eligibility criteria is below. To qualify, you’ll need to meet one of these criteria first:
- You or a household member (or tenant) currently receives government assistance.
- Your home has an inefficient heating system, with an energy efficiency rating between D and G.

Some Additional Schemes
1) Warmer Homes Scotland
Warmer Homes Scotland offers funding to improve home warmth and lower energy bills, including support for renewable technologies like solar panels.
However, the programme primarily targets upgrades such as heating and insulation, so obtaining approval specifically for solar panel installation can be challenging.
Eligibility Requirements:
To qualify for a Warmer Homes Scotland grant, you must be a homeowner or a private-sector tenant and have resided in the property for at least six months.
Additionally, your home must meet these conditions:
- Have a low energy rating
- Be no larger than 230m² in floor area
- Comply with the standards in the Housing (Scotland) Act 2006
- Fall within council tax bands A to F
Your household must also meet one of these additional criteria: lack central heating and include someone aged 75 or older, have someone with a DS1500 or BASRiS medical certificate, or include someone receiving certain benefits.
For the full eligibility details, check Home Energy Scotland’s page.
2) Community and Renewable Energy Scheme
The Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) was established to promote renewable energy adoption among local communities in Scotland, including solar panel projects.
CARES provides funding specifically for community organisations and charities, with funding rounds released periodically.
This scheme can cover up to 80% of the costs for renewable energy projects on community buildings and serves as a resource hub to guide communities in establishing renewable initiatives.
For updates on funding rounds and application details, visit Local Energy Scotland.
Eligibility
CARES is open to non-profit community groups, faith-based organisations, and charities that operate within a specific geographic area.
To apply, first access CARES’ project portal. If eligible, complete an application form specifying the renewable technology for which funding is needed, along with installer quotes.
3) Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund
The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, available in select areas from February 2024, supports public sector companies in reducing building emissions by 75% by 2037.
Together with the Public Sector Low Carbon Skills Fund, this scheme provides funding for renewable technologies, including solar panels, making it beneficial for institutions looking to invest in commercial solar systems. Among solar grants in Scotland, these programs are more tailored to businesses and organisations rather than residential solar installations.
Funding is available across the UK, including Scotland, for reserved public services, but it varies by municipality. It’s advisable to consult your local authority or installer for regional specifics.
Managed by Salix Finance, this funding is directed exclusively at public sector entities, with no provisions for residential installations. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has confirmed the launch of the 4th phase of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS).
4)Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a government initiative in the UK that allows small-scale solar energy producers, including homeowners in Scotland, to earn money by selling excess energy back to the grid.
Through SEG, energy suppliers with more than 150,000 customers are legally required to offer export tariffs, which pay solar energy producers for each unit of surplus electricity they generate.
These tariffs vary depending on the supplier, but rates generally range between 1p and 15p per kWh, giving homeowners a financial incentive to offset their initial solar panel investment. As a result, SEG can shorten the payback period for solar systems, making solar energy a more financially viable option in Scotland despite the country’s variable weather conditions.
The scheme’s benefit is particularly evident given Scotland’s growing solar capacity. While solar panel installations in Scotland might generate slightly less electricity compared to sunnier regions, households can still produce a considerable surplus during peak daylight hours.
House size | Household electricity consumption | Solar panel system size | Annual savings without SEG | Average annual savings with SEG |
Small; 1-2 bedrooms | 1,800kWh | 3kW | £430.75 | £480 |
Medium; 2-3 bedrooms | 2,700kWh | 4kW | £662.20 | £700 |
Medium; 2-3 bedrooms | 2,700kWh | 5kW | £660 | £745 |
Large; 4-5 bedrooms | 4,100kWh | 6kW | £1,005 | £1,060 |

5) 0% VAT
The 0% VAT policy on solar panels is a significant financial incentive for homeowners in Scotland looking to adopt renewable energy.
Introduced to lower the upfront costs of solar installations, this VAT exemption reduces the overall price by around £2,850 for an average 4kW solar system, which is substantial given the average system cost.
Instead of being a direct grant, the 0% VAT policy applies as a tax reduction at the supplier level, effectively making solar panel installations more affordable.
This exemption is part of the UK government’s broader initiative to encourage the adoption of clean energy and ease the transition toward net-zero emissions.
By removing VAT, the government makes it easier for more households to consider renewable solutions, helping Scotland and the rest of the UK decrease reliance on fossil fuels.
With the average Scottish household’s energy savings from solar panels potentially reaching hundreds of pounds annually, this VAT relief adds further value to the initial investment, making renewable energy solutions more accessible.

Solar Panel Grant FAQs
Applying for solar panel grants can feel a little daunting – but don’t worry! That’s something we can help you with at ZOA Energy Solutions. Fill out our form so we can determine if you’re eligible for any solar grants. If you are, we’ll then talk you through the specific application process for that specific grant. It couldn’t be easier.
Each grant is different and the amount of money you’ll receive for a solar installation will differ depending on your circumstances, but some solar grants could cover the full price of your solar panel system – up to around £10,000. Since a typical 3.5kW system, suitable for an average UK home, costs around £5,500, the majority of UK homes that qualify for the grant schemes won’t need to pay anything at all.
Those that require larger, more expensive systems, could end up paying for just a fraction of the total cost whilst the solar panel grant covers the majority.
No! So long as you receive a solar panel grant – and NOT opt for finance options to pay for your solar panels with a company that gives you a loan, not a grant – then you won’t have to pay a penny of your grant back.
This is so the most vulnerable in society, with low income households and energy inefficient homes, can enjoy the benefit of solar panels without the cost. If you qualify for a grant, you won’t need to pay it back.
