What is Party Wall Insulation?
Party wall insulation is the process of adding insulation material within the cavity of a shared wall between two adjoining properties. It prevents heat loss through the wall, improving energy efficiency. In the UK, uninsulated party walls can account for up to a third of total heat loss in a home. Party wall cavity insulation can save households up to £340 per year, depending on the property type and number of party walls.
It also enhances soundproofing and reduces carbon emissions, supporting the UK’s net-zero goals. It is estimated that more than a quarter of homes in the UK or approximately 5 million homes, could benefit from party wall insulation.
By retaining heat more effectively, homes become warmer and more comfortable, especially during winter, while significantly reducing environmental impact.
What are the Benefits of Party Wall Insulation?
Party wall insulation improves energy efficiency by reducing heat loss through shared walls between adjoining properties. This helps homeowners save on energy bills, enhances indoor comfort, and supports the UK’s carbon reduction targets. It is particularly beneficial for older UK homes with uninsulated party walls. Below are the key benefits:
- Lower Energy Bills: Save up to £340 per year by reducing heat transfer through walls.
- Improved Thermal Comfort: Homes stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
- Soundproofing: Reduces noise transfer between adjoining properties, ensuring privacy.
- Reduced Carbon Footprint: Helps cut CO2 emissions, contributing to the UK’s net-zero goals.
Compliance with Regulations: Meets modern building standards and increases a property’s EPC rating, boosting its market value.
Grants for Party Wall Insulation
In the UK, various grants and schemes support homeowners in installing party wall insulation, helping to improve energy efficiency and reduce heating costs. One prominent initiative is the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme, which provides funding to low-income households or those on certain benefits to cover insulation costs.
Local councils may also offer grants under Home Energy Efficiency Programmes aimed at reducing carbon emissions and tackling fuel poverty. Landlords can also benefit from landlord-specific grants aimed to support tenants and reduce energy costs, which will also help landlords meet minimum energy efficiency standards (MEES) for rented properties.
Eligibility criteria typically depend on factors such as household income, property type, and existing insulation. Grants often cover a significant portion, or even the full cost, of party wall insulation, making it an affordable option for many UK homeowners to improve thermal efficiency and lower energy bills.

Eco Grants for Party Wall Insulation
The UK’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme offers grants to help homeowners and tenants improve energy efficiency through measures like party wall insulation. These grants are designed for low-income households or those receiving qualifying benefits. You will qualify for ECO grants if you are a low-income household i.e. your household earns less than £31,000 per year, in total.
The ECO4 scheme places responsibility on the country’s main energy suppliers including British Gas, E. ON, Npower, Scottish Power, SSE, EDF and others to provide grants to pay for insulation-qualifying households.
ECO grants can cover the full cost of party wall insulation, depending on eligibility, including the type of property and its existing energy efficiency. For example, homes with poor insulation or a low EPC rating (D or below) are prioritized.
