Why Bother With New Insulation?

New insulation can make a huge difference to your home. It brings a range of benefits your way, some of which could influence the way you experience your disability.

For example, colder homes can be especially difficult for individuals with certain disabilities, and having poor insulation in your home can definitely mean your home becomes colder and therefore more uncomfortable.

You can also expect the following benefits of installing new insulation with insulation grants for disabled people:

  • Lower heating bills
  • Reduced carbon emissions
  • More comfortable home
  • Increased property value
  • Better EPC ratings

What Insulation Grants Are Available For Disabled People In The UK?

Although there are no insulation grants specifically for disabled people, the following grants will be the most relevant to you:

  • Great British Insulation Scheme
  • ECO4
  • LA Flex

Funding for these schemes comes from the main energy companies. These energy suppliers – including British Gas, Eon, Scottish Power and others – are obligated to provide financial support as part of a drive to help households make energy saving improvements that will help with the cost of their heating bills plus improve their home’s energy efficiency to reduce carbon footprints.

How Can Eco Grants Help With Insulation Grants For Disabled People?

If you’re living in an energy inefficient home with a low household income (typically considered to be below £31,000 per year) then you’ll likely qualify for support through insulation grants. That’s regardless of anything else.

However, there are home insulation grants for disabled people that could help if you’re looking for support – although not specifically for people with disabilities, it’s likely you will qualify. Fill out our form and find out if you qualify, and then read below to learn more about the different grants you might be entitled to.

What Is The Great British Insulation Scheme For Disabled People?

Formerly known as ECO+, the Great British Insulation Scheme started in 2023 and lasts until March 2026 – offering £1 billion in funding. The homes this scheme targets are those with poor energy efficiency with households that have a low combined income.

Although not specifically aimed at individuals with disabilities, there are plenty of disabled people who have been supported by the scheme and will continue to be so.

How Do I Qualify For Support?

In order to qualify for support under the Great British Insulation Scheme, you’ll need to be living in:

  • A home with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D-G, AND
  • A council tax band A-D in England, A-E in Scotland and Wales

OR

  • Be receiving means tested benefits*, AND
  • Have an EPC rating of D-G

*As you’ll probably know, disability benefits aren’t usually means tested, but with a low household income and a poor EPC rating, you’ll likely still be eligible even if the only support you receive is disability based. If you also receive a means tested benefit in addition to your disability support, then you’ll likely be eligible for insulation grants for disabled people.

What Is The ECO4 Scheme For Disabled People?

Again, ECO4 isn’t a home insulation grant for disabled people specifically, but it’s possible that your circumstances match the eligibility criteria below, allowing you to access support that will provide funding for loft insulation, free cavity wall insulation or some other form of insulation.

ECO4 Eligibility Criteria

The aim here is once again to support low income households living in energy inefficient homes, so the requirements reflect that. You’ll likely be eligible if you:
  • Receive government benefits or someone in your household/a tenant does
  • Have an EPC rating of D-G
  • Receive child benefit AND your household income falls below a specific threshold

Applicable Government Benefits For ECO4

  • Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-Related Employment & Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit Guarantee
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Universal Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit Savings

As you can see, there are no disability related benefits on the list. HOWEVER, if you are in receipt of benefits for your disability, then it’s highly likely you also receive one of the benefits on the list – e.g. Housing Benefit or Universal Credit, meaning you would still qualify.

Child Benefit Household Income Thresholds

Receiving child benefit alone isn’t enough to qualify for grant support under ECO4. You’ll also need to have a household income less than the amounts shown below:

 1 Child2 Children 3 Children4+ Children
Single-Parent Household£19,800£24,600£29,400£34,200
Two-Parent Household£27,300£32,100£36,900£41,700

How Can LA Flex For Disabled People Help?

LA Flex (or the Local Authority Flexible Eligibility Scheme) is part of the ECO4 scheme, but the main difference is that it gives local authorities and councils greater flexibility in who they can offer grant support to.

LA Flex Eligibility Criteria

In order to qualify for a free insulation grant under Flex criteria you must be living in an energy inefficient home AND:

  • Have an annual household income below £31,000, OR
  • Have health problems that may be worsened by living in an energy inefficient home such as cardiovascular, mobility, respiratory, or immune-suppressed conditions (which may be relevant to you as a person with disabilities), OR
  • Meet any two of the following criteria:
    • House is in LSOA 1-3 Area
    • Householder receives Council Tax rebates due to low income
    • Householder is considered vulnerable to living in a cold home
    • Householder is referred to LA Flex by the Local Authority Delivery (LAD) Scheme due to being vulnerable and in a low income household
    • Members of the household receive free school meals
    • Citizens Advice, the householder’s energy supplier or mortgage lender has advised the householder to seek help from a government scheme due to sustained debt on mortgage payments or utility bills

How Does 0% VAT On Insulation Help Me?

The UK government has applied 0% VAT on all Energy Saving Materials in the UK – and this applies to cavity wall insulation, too. First introduced in April 2022, 0% VAT on insulation is set to last until the end of March 2027.

This is automatically applied on any qualifying purchase, so you don’t have to apply through a scheme or anything – you just get to enjoy cheaper cavity wall insulation, which will help stretch those government grants even further.

Insulation Grants For Disabled People FAQs

You certainly could get free insulation if you are disabled, but how much you’ll receive from each grant will be decided on a case-by-case basis. How much your insulation install job will cost will influence whether you get free insulation, or you pay a much smaller amount than you otherwise would. Check your eligibility with us today.

You could potentially receive an insulation grant that makes your insulation completely free, or at least much cheaper than it otherwise would be. If you receive funding for free loft insulation or roof insulation, it is possible that the full cost will be covered because this type of insulation is generally less costly. With other options, such as having cavity wall insulation installed, internal wall insulation, or solid wall insulation, your insulation grant may only partially cover the cost.

With new insulation, your previously energy inefficient home will be better thermally insulated meaning you could quite easily enjoy energy bill savings of between £300 and £400 per year.

Although each grant has a different application process, we here at Eco Grants have years of experience working with our customers to help them get the support they’re entitled to. Check your eligibility with us today and we’ll do our best to support you through the application process should you qualify for any insulation grants for disabled people.
