What are the Insulation Grants for Businesses?

Although there are currently no nationwide government-funded schemes specifically targeting insulation grants for businesses, other funding opportunities may still be available. Engaging with energy experts and professional installers can help you discover relevant funding options tailored to your business needs. These experts often have insights into regional or industry-specific initiatives that might not be widely publicised.

Meanwhile, private and social landlords can benefit from government grants designed to retrofit insulation and improve the energy efficiency of their rental properties. These grants aim to support eligible tenants in achieving better energy performance, provided they have the permission of the landlord. Examples of such grants for tenants in rental housing include measures that enhance insulation standards and lower energy consumption.

By consulting with specialists, you can explore funding solutions that align with your goals for sustainable energy efficiency. Some government-backed schemes that could provide insulation funding for domestic properties include;

  • Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)
  • Energy Company Obligation (ECO4)
  • Warmer Homes Scotland
  • Warm Homes Programme Wales
  • Warm Homes Plan (from 2025)

Local Grant Opportunities

While funding for insulation measures for businesses doesn’t really operate on a nationwide level, aside from some funding for landlords and their tenants, there are a number of local grant opportunities that could help businesses with the costs in installing insulation. Here are a few examples, but you should also look to see if there is any available funding in your local area…

Low Carbon Workspaces Grant

The Low Carbon Workspaces Grant offers funding to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in select areas to support energy efficiency projects. Businesses can receive grants of £1,000 to £6,750 to cover up to a third of the project cost.

Eligible projects include installing LED lighting, upgrading heating systems, improving insulation, and more. The grant is managed in collaboration with various local councils, including Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Berkshire.

Eligibility requires the business to be an SME based in these regions, and projects must contribute to reducing carbon emissions.

Low Carbon Lake District Grants (Cumbria)

Available to small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and community groups in Cumbria, particularly those operating within or around the Lake District National Park.

It provides up to 60% of project costs for implementing low-carbon technologies or practices, such as improved insulation, renewable energy systems, and energy-efficient equipment.

SMEs and community organisations committed to reducing their carbon footprint are eligible for this grant.

The Low Carbon Across the South East (LoCASE)

The Low Carbon Across the South East (LoCASE) program provides grants of up to £10,000 to support businesses in adopting energy efficiency measures, including insulation and renewable energy solutions.

Covering regions like Kent, Essex, and East Sussex, it funds up to 40% of project costs. Eligible businesses include small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking to lower their carbon footprint and improve sustainability. Applications are open for businesses operating in the South East region.

Business Energy Efficiency Anglia (BEE Anglia)

The Business Energy Efficiency Anglia (BEE Anglia) program supports businesses in Norfolk, Suffolk, and parts of Cambridgeshire by offering grants of up to £20,000 for energy-efficient upgrades.

Eligible businesses must be SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) looking to implement energy-saving measures such as LED lighting, insulation, or more efficient equipment.

The grant covers up to 28% of project costs, and free energy audits are also available to identify potential improvements

What Type of Insulation May Be Suitable For A Commercial Property?

When upgrading insulation for your business, several types of insulation are available to improve energy efficiency and reduce heating or cooling costs. Here’s a breakdown of the common types of insulation businesses could consider:

1. Loft Insulation

Loft insulation is one of the most effective ways to prevent heat loss through the roof. It involves laying materials like mineral wool or foam boards between and over ceiling joists. This is ideal for businesses in older buildings where heat escapes quickly through the roof. Loft insulation can reduce energy bills significantly and is a quick, cost-effective solution.

2. Cavity Wall Insulation

For buildings with cavity walls, insulation can be injected into the wall cavity to minimize heat transfer. Materials like polyurethane foam or polystyrene beads are commonly used. This type of insulation is perfect for business premises with uninsulated or poorly insulated walls, especially in colder climates.

3. Solid Wall Insulation

Businesses located in older properties with solid walls can benefit from internal or external wall insulation. Internal insulation involves applying insulation boards inside, while external insulation involves fixing insulating materials and rendering outside. This is especially useful for maintaining a consistent indoor temperature.

4. Floor Insulation

For businesses operating in spaces with ground floors, insulating the floor can help reduce heat loss. Rigid foam boards or spray foam can be used under floorboards or concrete floors, providing comfort and cutting energy costs.

5. Pipe Insulation

Insulating pipes, especially in industrial or large commercial buildings, prevent heat loss in hot water pipes and minimizes the risk of pipes freezing in colder areas.

6. Draught Proofing

Sealants, strips, or foam can be used to eliminate draughts around doors, windows, and other openings, significantly enhancing insulation and reducing energy waste.

These options can be tailored to your business needs, offering long-term savings and environmental benefits.

Why Do Commercial Businesses Need Insulation?

Installing insulation is a critical step for businesses to improve energy efficiency and meet regulatory requirements. Commercial properties in the UK are rated on an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) scale from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient).

Since 2018, the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) mandate that rented commercial properties must have a minimum EPC rating of E for new tenancies, making insulation upgrades essential.

Insulation can reduce heat loss by up to 30%, significantly lowering energy bills. Additionally, improved energy efficiency supports sustainability goals and helps businesses cut operational costs while reducing their carbon footprint

How Much Can Commercial Properties Save with Proper Insulation?

Proper insulation can significantly reduce energy costs for businesses. Savings will depend on many different factors including the type and size of the property and the insulation measure(s) being installed.

It is estimated that insulation upgrades combined with draught-proofing measures could reduce energy consumption by up to 40%, significantly boosting energy efficiency and minimising a business’ environmental impact. These carbon savings can enhance the reputation of businesses that wish to present themselves as more environmentally responsible.
