What Is Included In The Free British Gas Insulation Scheme?

As part of the ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Schemes, you may be able to receive free insulation for your home to help boost the energy efficiency levels of your property. Included within the schemes are a variety of insulation types.

Types Of Insulation Available:

Through the British Gas insulation scheme there are nine types of insulation available to help you maximise the energy efficiency levels of your home. These are:

Types of insulation

Loft insulation

Insulation installed in your loft space that works to trap heat in the living areas of your home. It will be installed between the joists or rafters in your loft.

Spray foam insulation

This type of insulation works to minimise the air movement in walls, floors, and ceilings where cavities are present.

Cavity wall insulation

During the cavity wall insulation process, insulation material is injected into the gap between the outer wall and the inner wall of your house in order to minimise the movement of air.

External wall insulation

Attached to the outside of your house, external wall insulation has two layers. The first providing the insulation, with the second outer layer providing a decorative finish and protection against weather conditions.

Flat roof insulation

Using either wood fibre, cellular glass, polystyrene, or foam, flat roof insulation relates to the insulation process of roofs that have a pitch below 10°.

Internal wall insulation

If you are looking to fit internal wall insulation, this is completed through the fitting of insulation boards or stud walls featuring insulation material, inside your home.

Party wall insulation

Similar to cavity wall insulation, however party wall insulation relates to a wall that is shared between yourself and your neighbour.

Underfloor insulation

If your house features suspended floors then you can install underfloor insulation that fills the gap. This will help retain heat in your house, while also reducing any draughts that may be as a result of your uninsulated floor.

Why Should You Insulate Your Home?

There are a variety of benefits and drawbacks related to insulating your home. However, there are four primary reasons behind why thousands of households in the United Kingdom have already signed up to the Great British Insulation Scheme or the ECO4 scheme. These key reasons are:

  • Reduction in your energy bills: A better insulated home will become less reliant on the household boiler, which will result in a reduction in your energy bills.
  • Your home will be more comfortable to live in: Not only does an insulated home keep the heat in during the winter, but it will keep the hot air out during the summer months. Making your home a better place to be during the most extreme seasons of the year.
  • Improve your household’s carbon footprint: By reducing the amount of energy your household both uses and wastes, you will be able to improve your carbon footprint.
  • Boost your home’s value: Properties that feature any type of insulation will see a boost in its value, making the free British Gas insulation grants a no-brainer.

Am I Eligible For Free British Gas Insulation?

If you are looking to move forward and claim your free British Gas insulation, then you need to check whether you are eligible. In order to receive free British Gas insulation, you must be either eligible to claim through the Great British Insulation Scheme or the ECO4 scheme.

ECO4 Eligibility Criteria:

The primary aim of the ECO4 scheme is to help households that are either classed as low-income or vulnerable to reduce their energy bills and become more energy efficient. Households that have an income threshold of £31,000 or below are eligible. Additionally, if one or more individuals in the household receive one (or more) of the following benefits, you may also be eligible.

  • Child Benefits
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC)
  • Housing Benefit (newly eligible under ECO4)
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit (newly eligible under ECO4)
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Warm Home Discount Scheme Rebate
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC)

Your home will also need to have an EPC rating of D or lower to be eligible.

How Does 0% VAT On Insulation Help Me?

The UK government has applied 0% VAT on all Energy Saving Materials in the UK – and this applies to cavity wall insulation, too. First introduced in April 2022, 0% VAT on insulation is set to last until the end of March 2027.

This is automatically applied on any qualifying purchase, so you don’t have to apply through a scheme or anything – you just get to enjoy cheaper cavity wall insulation, which will help stretch those government grants even further.

Great British Insulation Scheme Eligibility Criteria:

If you do not meet the ECO4 criteria, then you may be able to claim your free British Gas insulation using the Great British Insulation Scheme. Through this scheme you will be able to receive a single insulation method, which will typically be either cavity wall or loft insulation. In order to meet this eligibility criteria, you must either:

  • Fall into Council Tax bands A to D in England.
  • Fall into Council Tax bands A to E in Wales and Scotland.

Additionally, your home will also need to have an EPC rating of D or lower.
