What Is An SSE Boiler Grant?

The SSE boiler grant is a way for some individuals to qualify for support for a new boiler. SSE, as one of the UK’s largest energy suppliers, are obligated to offer support to their most vulnerable customers (usually classed as low income households living in energy inefficient homes).

There are multiple grant schemes that SSE are a part of to help offer this support – all of which are government-led and most other large energy suppliers (which are categorised as energy suppliers with 100,000+ UK customers) are also part of these schemes as the government have insisted that large energy suppliers must offer appropriate support to customers who are struggling to heat their homes due to poor Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings and high energy bills.

The two main grant schemes you could qualify for as part of the SSE boiler grant are:

  • ECO4
  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme

ECO4 Explained

ECO4 stands for the Energy Company Obligation and it’s a large scheme that has seen multiple iterations over the years, all of which encourage energy suppliers to support their most vulnerable customers living in houses with low EPC ratings with low incomes.

ECO4 offers a range of energy efficiency measures, including replacing old, inefficient boilers, with new combi boilers that are much more effective at getting a home up to temperature and keeping it there.

In order for a new boiler to be offered as part of ECO4, a survey will usually have to be completed to ensure other energy efficiency measures aren’t more appropriate, such as insulation, which could improve your EPC ratings much more effectively depending on your house’s issues.

In order to get access to some of the funds on offer by the £4 billion funded UK government scheme via SSE, you’ll have to be:

  • An SSE customer
  • A homeowner or private tenant in a home with an EPC rating of D-G
  • In receipt of government benefits

Applicable Government Benefits

Below is the full list of government benefits – if you’re in receipt of any of the following, and you’re an SSE customer who lives in a home with an EPC rating of D-G, then you’ll likely qualify for the SSE boiler grant through ECO4:

Boiler Upgrade Scheme Explained

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (or BUS) is another government led scheme with similar eligibility criteria to ECO4, but it differs in its approach. Rather than offering a whole house approach, BUS focuses specifically on replacing inefficient boilers.

However, you won’t replace an old boiler with a modern combi boiler here as you probably will with ECO4, and that’s because BUS focuses on switching to the greenest options out there, including:

  • Ground source heat pumps
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Biomass boilers

The scheme has recently been extended to 2028, and offers £5,000 in support towards the cost of air source heat pumps and biomass boilers, and £6,000 towards a ground source heat pump.

BUS Eligibility Criteria

It’s important to note that you’ll be excluded from the BUS if you’ve already received support through another scheme for a boiler upgrade. The scheme is also only available in England and Wales. You’ll also need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be an SSE customer
  • Own or privately rent a home with a poor EPC rating
  • Be replacing fossil fuel heating systems
  • Own an energy inefficient boiler
  • Be considered a low income household

But biomass boilers aren’t suitable for every household, so if you have your heart set on a new boiler rather than a heat pump, then ECO4 may be a better scheme for you.

Why Aren’t Biomass Boilers Suitable For Every Household?

In order to receive a grant for a biomass boiler via the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, your property will need to be off the gas grid in a rural location. This applies to very few households in England and Wales, but for those it does apply to, the scheme could offer £5,000 off the cost of your new biomass boiler.

Biomass boilers are far greener and, in order to qualify for support, should come with a certificate showing that polluting emissions are kept to a minimum.

SSE Boiler Grant FAQs:

Yes, it does.

For those that are unfamiliar with the scheme, LA Flex (or the Local Authority Flexible Eligibility Scheme) is designed to give local authorities and councils greater flexibility over who qualifies for support. The scheme is very closely related to ECO4, but it extends the eligibility criteria so it’s easier for different people to get access to the support they need for a new boiler, such as:

  • Those with health issues
  • Those with sustained debt
  • Those living in areas of deprivation in the UK
  • Etc

It’s absolutely possible to get a free boiler with SSE, but you’ll first need to qualify and ensure that the grant amount you receive covers the full cost of the installation.

Remember, this grant scheme is paid directly to the installer, so if the grant you’re entitled to doesn’t cover the full cost, you’ll need to pay the rest of the bill. How much you’ll receive depends on the cost of your new boiler installation, your household income, and the scheme you qualify for etc, and is decided on an individual basis.
