How A Boiler Upgrade Or Replacement Can Help You

Everyone feels the pinch of high energy bills, but pensioners especially when they have limited income. At a time when many pensioners in fuel poverty are faced with a decision between putting heating on or food on the table, it’s about time the older generation started taking advantage of available funding to improve energy efficiency in their homes and drive down heating bills.

Old boilers are inefficient. They waste a lot of energy creating heat, and they require more energy than modern boilers to heat your home and keep it warm. Inevitably the more energy you use, the higher your heating bills will be. In a time when energy bills are already high, you can’t afford an old boiler needlessly driving your costs even higher for you.

So what’s the solution?

A boiler replacement or upgrade is the single best way to help you save an average of £300 per year on energy bills, reduce carbon emissions from your home, and to enjoy a more comfortable home for you to live in.

And the best thing of all? As a pensioner, you might qualify for a completely free boiler grant – and we’ll cover how below.

Free Boiler Replacement Scheme For Pensioners: A Complete Guide

Free boiler upgrades and replacements for pensioners are designed to support pensioners in the lowest-income households with homes that perform poorly in terms of their energy efficiency (usually determined by an energy performance rating of D, E, F or G).

In other words, free boiler schemes and grants for pensioners are designed for those who are entitled to support. If you’re not eligible, then you’re not eligible, but it’s always worth checking.

In terms of the support that’s out there, the following schemes and grants will be most relevant to you as a pensioner:

  • ECO4
  • LA Flex
  • Warm Homes Fund
  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme

ECO4 For Pensioners Looking For Boiler Replacement

ECO4 is a wide-reaching eco scheme designed to help the lowest-income households in the most energy-inefficient homes in the UK, so it applies to more than just pensioners. With that said, pensioners often own these homes or are a tenant in them. (Yes, a free boiler for tenants is part of the ECO4 scheme, you just need your landlord to apply on your behalf if you meet the eligibility criteria below).

Now, the government’s Energy Company Obligation Scheme (ECO) covers a range of eco-home improvements that tackle carbon emissions and provide funding for energy saving improvements, and boilers are certainly a part of that, too. With free boiler grants funding provided by some of the main energy companies, including British Gas, the funding is free and does not have to be repaid.

If you’re a pensioner looking for government boiler grants, you may qualify for funding under ECO4, but first, you have to find out if you qualify…

ECO4 Eligibility Criteria For Pensioners

Below we’ll cover eligibility criteria for pensioners for the ECO scheme in-depth, but you can also find out if you qualify for a share of the available boiler grants by filling out a quick form with us today.

If you’re interested in the full list of eligibility criteria, then read below.

To qualify for funding for a replacement boiler for pensioners, you’ll need to meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be in receipt of government benefits OR someone in your household or a tenant is (a list of applicable government benefits can be found below)
  • Have an inefficient heating system with a D-G energy efficiency rating
  • Be in receipt of child benefits AND have a household income below a specific threshold

Applicable Government Benefits Under Energy Company Obligation

  • Pension Credit Guarantee
  • Pension Credit Savings
  • Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-Related Employment & Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Universal Credit
  • Housing Benefit

Perhaps the most pertinent to pensioners is pension credit – if you claim. pension credit or receive pension savings credit and have an energy-inefficient home with a rating of D-G, then the chances are you’ll be entitled to support for your boiler replacement under ECO4.

How Do I Apply For ECO4 Funding?

We understand that the application process can feel like a barrier to some people, but we’re here to assure you that it’s a simple process that we can help you with, so you needn’t worry.

As grant and scheme experts at Eco Grants, we know the process like the back of our hands, so we can tell you quickly if you qualify for support under ECO4 (or another scheme which we’ll cover below) and then help you understand how to apply.

We’re here to help you through the entire process – from grant and scheme funding applications to the installation itself – so trust us to assist you on your replacement boiler journey today.

Will ECO4 Give Me A Free Boiler Grant For Pensioners?

It certainly can, but whether or not it will depends on the amount of money you’re entitled to under the scheme – and this is decided on a case-by-case basis. So yes, you might receive a free boiler grant under ECO4, because your grant may cover the full cost of the boiler and its installation costs.

For some, though, the full cost won’t be covered, so you’ll have to fund part of the installation yourself. With ECO4 support, you’ll save £100s if not £1000s on your boiler installation, so it’s well worth considering. Note, funding does not cover the cost of boiler repair.

LA Flex For Pensioners Requiring A New Boiler

If you don’t qualify for support under ECO4, there are still other options. LA Flex is another great option for pensioners looking for support for a new boiler to replace an old, inefficient one.

LA Flex (which stands for Local Authority Flexible Eligibility Scheme) is basically the sister of ECO4, in that they’re incredibly similar, but the main difference is that the LA Flex scheme has greater flexibility when it comes to the eligibility criteria it offers.

Under LA Flex, local authorities and councils can extend the eligibility criteria in order to offer targeted support to the most vulnerable households in terms of their income and energy efficiency. Each local authority and council is different, but they do follow a similar set of eligibility criteria to help them support those who need it most – and pensioners are usually covered in their list of priority households to support.

LA Flex Eligibility Criteria For Pensioners

So long as you live in a home with an energy efficiency rating of E-G, have an annual household income of less than £31,000 and/or meet two of the following criteria, then you ought to qualify under LA Flex for a free boiler replacement for pensioners:

  • Have health problems that may be worsened by living in an energy-inefficient home, such as cardiovascular problems, mobility issues, respiratory issues, or immune-suppressed conditions
  • House in LSOA 1-3 Area (recognised as an area of deprivation in the UK)
  • Householder receives Council Tax rebates due to low income
  • Householder is considered vulnerable to living in a cold home according to nationally recognised NICE guidance
  • You have been referred to LA Flex by the Local Authority Delivery (LAD) Scheme due to being vulnerable and in a low-income household
  • Members of the household are in receipt of free school meals
  • Citizens Advice, your energy supplier, or your mortgage lender has advised you to seek help from government schemes due to sustained debt on mortgage payments or utility bills

Of course, any of these criteria could apply to anybody, and LA Flex isn’t designed to target pensioners specifically, but if any of the criteria above apply to you, and you have an inefficient boiler that’s old, then you ought to look into how LA Flex can support you with central heating grants.

Warm Homes Fund For Pensioners

Again, the Warm Homes Fund isn’t designed specifically for pensioners, but its eligibility criteria usually relate to pensioners, so it’s a great scheme to keep in mind if you’re a pensioner who is looking to replace an old boiler with a newer, more efficient one.

Essentially, the Warm Homes Fund was established in 2017 by Affordable Warmth Solutions, the National Grid, and Community Interest Company to provide around £160 million in funding to support energy-inefficient homes and low-income households with an eco home improvement such as a new boiler.

This might apply to you as a pensioner.

Who Is Eligible And How Do I Apply?

The Warm Homes Fund is a brilliant scheme that’s already helped countless households live more comfortable lives in a home with an efficient boiler that reduces energy bills and carbon emissions. But, there’s no denying that it can be complicated to access the funds if you’re an average person without an in-depth knowledge of how these grants and schemes work.

Enter, Eco Grants by ZOA Energy Solutions.

Why? Because as part of Eco Grants, we do all we can to ensure you get access to the funding you could be entitled to.

The Warm Homes Fund can be complicated, but work with us today and we’ll tell you first if you’re eligible for support for a new boiler, and second how to access that funding with our support.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

While many pensioners may be looking for a grant to replace their old boiler with a brand new boiler, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme aims to encourage property owners to replace their gas boiler with a more energy efficient, low carbon heating system such as heat pump. Grants of up to £7,500 are available for the installation of air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps.

These grants could help pensioners overcome the cost of installing a low carbon heating alternative to their old gas central heating system. Apply for a grant and see if you qualify for funding to replace your old gas or oil boiler for a greener energy saving heating alternative.
