What Is The Octopus Energy Free Boiler Scheme?

The Octopus Energy free boiler scheme is really just a simple way to explain that Octopus Energy, a large energy supplier in the UK, is a part of multiple grants and schemes to help their most vulnerable customers enjoy a more energy efficient household with lower energy bills.

Although it’s important to note that even if you qualify for support for a new boiler with Octopus Energy, you may not actually receive a completely free boiler. The amount you’ll receive in support will depend on a few different factors such as your household income and the cost of your installation, and that may not cover the full cost of your boiler installation.

Still, it is possible to receive a completely free boiler with Octopus Energy, if you qualify for enough support under a scheme that they’re a part of.

What Schemes Are Octopus Energy A Part Of?

The two most common schemes that give you the best chance of a free boiler with Octopus Energy are:

  • Energy Company Obligation 4 Scheme (ECO4)
  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

Both schemes are government-led, but they target the largest energy suppliers in the UK – such as Octopus Energy – to encourage them to support their own customers who are facing the highest energy bills due to living in a home with a poor energy performance certificate (EPC) rating.

The UK government is keen to encourage energy suppliers to support their customers in improving their home’s energy efficiency because it also means that there’s less carbon emissions being produced by these homes. As the government moves towards their legally binding target of reaching Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050, schemes like ECO4 and BUS can help eliminate carbon emissions from the houses in the UK that are currently contributing the most to the problem.

ECO4 Via Octopus Energy Explained

ECO4 is a government-led scheme aimed at supporting the lowest income households in the UK living in the worst performing homes in terms of their energy efficiency (obvious by their poor EPC ratings). It doesn’t just cover boiler upgrades, either – ECO4 is a whole house approach that can take care of a range of energy efficiency improvement measures from insulation right the way through to replacement boilers.

A survey may need to take place to determine the best course of action for you and your home – it may be determined that a new boiler is necessary, or it may not.

Typically, though, if you have an old, inefficient boiler, then the chances are a replacement will be necessary in order to improve your EPC rating and energy efficiency.

BUS Via Octopus Energy Explained

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, or BUS, is another way you can qualify for the Octopus Energy free boiler scheme, as it too aims to support those looking to upgrade their boiler when living in an energy-inefficient home with a low household income.

The main difference between BUS and ECO4 is that BUS does focus exclusively on boilers, but you won’t be upgrading to a more energy efficient combi boiler here. Instead, you’ll be upgrading to either an air source heat pump, ground source heat pump, or biomass boiler

The idea behind the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is that it can help you switch to a greener heating system that can support your whole home whilst reducing carbon emissions. The scheme will run until 2028 and offers £5,000 towards the cost of a heat pump or biomass boiler.

BUS Eligibility Criteria

It’s important to note that the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is only available in England and Wales. In order to qualify via the Octopus Energy free boiler scheme, you’ll need to meet the following criteria:

  • You’ll need to be an Octopus Energy customer
  • You’ll need to have an older boiler that runs on fossil fuels that could benefit from being switched to a greener option
  • You’ll need to live in a home with a poor EPC rating
  • You’ll need be considered a low income household

Meeting all of this may mean you are entitled to £5,000 off the cost of a heat pump or biomass boiler to replace their inefficient boiler.

Octopus Energy Free Boiler Scheme FAQs:

The Octopus Energy-saving grant is just another way of saying the Octopus Energy free boiler scheme – neither truly exist because Octopus Energy don’t run their own grants and schemes here. Instead, they’re a part of government-led schemes such as ECO4 and BUS.

No. First, even if you qualify for support that will cover the full cost of your new boiler, it’ll be the government grant that covers the cost. And second, not everybody who is eligible for support will be entitled to a completely free boiler. Some will only receive a grant that covers part of the cost of the installation and will need to contribute the rest themselves.

A free boiler through Octopus Energy is aimed at their most vulnerable customers. That means people living in the poorest performing homes in terms of energy efficiency and with the lowest household incomes will most likely qualify for a completely free boiler as they’ll be provided with a larger grant to support their transition to a more comfortable home with lower energy bills.
