How To Get A Free Boiler Wales

Not everybody will qualify for the schemes we’ll cover below which could potentially give you access to free boiler funding in Wales. Notice how we said potentially. Even those who are eligible for support through the schemes might not get a completely free boiler – the exact amount of funding support you’ll receive will be decided on a case by case basis based on the cost of your new boiler installation and your household income – among other things.

The two main schemes that could help provide financial assistance for energy efficiency improvements in Wales are:

  • Welsh Government Warm Homes Nest Scheme (Nest)
  • Energy Company Obligation 4 Scheme (ECO4)

Nest Scheme Explained

Nest is a scheme set up by the Welsh government to support those most vulnerable households who are struggling to pay their energy bills and are living in homes with substandard energy performance certificate (EPC) ratings. Multiple energy efficiency improvement installations are covered by the Nest scheme, including upgrades to a new, more energy efficient and cost-effective boiler.

£1000s in support is on offer to the most vulnerable households, but in order to qualify for support you’ll need to meet certain eligibility criteria – as well as be a full-time resident in Wales.

Nest Eligibility Criteria

In order to qualify for Nest support you’ll need to meet all 3 of the following criteria:

  1. Own or privately rent a home in Wales full-time – you can’t live in social housing ran by a local authority or council
  2. Live in a home that’s energy inefficient and expensive to heat
  3. You or someone you live with (or a private tenant if you’re a landlord) receives a means tested benefit OR has a health condition that could be worsened by living in an energy inefficient home

Relevant Means Tested Benefits

Child Tax Credit (with an income below £16,105 per year)Council Tax ReductionHousing Benefit
Income-Based Jobseeker’s AllowanceIncome-Related Employment And Support AllowanceIncome Support
Pension CreditUniversal CreditWorking Tax Credit (with an income below £16,105 per year)

Health Condition Eligibility Criteria

You don’t just have to be receiving a means tested benefit in order to qualify for the Nest scheme. If you or someone you live with has a health condition that could be worsened by living in an energy inefficient home, then you could still qualify for support.

In order to qualify under the health condition criteria you or someone you live with must:

  • Have a chronic respiratory, circulatory or mental health condition such as:
    • Respiratory infection, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or broncho-constriction in asthma, etc.
    • Cardio-vascular disease, strokes, or heart attacks, etc.
    • Depression, anxiety, psychosis and bipolar disorders, dementia, or intellectual and developmental disorders, etc.
  • Be living in a low income household with poor energy efficiency

ECO4 Explained

ECO4 is another great way for individuals to qualify for free boiler grants in Wales, but again, you’ll need to meet certain eligibility criteria first. It’s a GB-wide scheme, and it aims to support the most vulnerable households living in the most energy inefficient homes with the poorest EPC ratings.

The scheme runs until March 2026 and there’s £1000s of support on offer to help with a range of eco home improvement measures, including funding for energy efficient boilers in place of old inefficient gas boilers and central heating systems. The grant funding comes from the main energy suppliers who are obligated by the UK Government to make a contribution towards helping low income households limit their energy usage and overall carbon footprint, as well as reduce fuel poverty.

ECO4 Eligibility Criteria

To potentially qualify for a boiler grant to replace your old mains gas boiler under ECO4, you’ll need to meet the following criteria:

  • Live in a home with an EPC rating of D-G
  • You or someone you live with/a tenant is in receipt of a qualifying government benefit

Free Boiler Wales FAQs:

Only those considered most vulnerable in Wales will qualify for a boiler grant This is usually based on health conditions, household incomes, and government benefits.

Not everybody who qualifies will receive full funding to replace their old boiler – some may have to cover part of the cost of installation with the approved installers themselves.

Absolutely! You don’t just have to be on benefits to qualify for funding for a new boiler. ECO4 extends some of its eligibility criteria via the Local Authority Flexibility (LA Flex) scheme to ensure more households get the help they deserve so they can use less energy and reduce their energy bills.

If you’re unsure if you qualify for support with the cost of replacing your current boiler, check with Eco Grants today.

A new boiler could see your old boiler replaced with an efficient A-rated boiler. These have an efficiency level usually of 90%+, compared with an old boiler where the efficiency level may have dropped as low as 65%. Homeowners who qualify for boiler grant funding could see significant annual savings, in some cases greater than £500 (if replacing an old G-rated boiler with a new A-rated condensing boiler).
