How To Get An EON Free Boiler

You will almost certainly have heard of EON Energy – one of the UK’s largest energy suppliers – but many of you won’t know that EON also provides you with a way to get a free boiler. Now, not everybody will be able to get a free boiler with EON Energy, because you will need to meet certain eligibility criteria in order to qualify for support.

It’s also important to note that EON don’t actually run any grants or schemes themselves – instead, they offer support through government-led grants and schemes, where they, as an energy supplier, are encouraged to support their most vulnerable customers to improve their energy efficiency and reduce energy bills so they can enjoy a more comfortable, affordable home.

What Grants & Schemes Are EON A Part Of?

EON Energy can offer support to their customers through two main schemes:

  • ECO4 (including LA Flex)
  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

These schemes are government-led, but they put the onus on the largest energy suppliers in the UK (such as EON Energy) to support the customers that need the most help. Whilst it’s the energy suppliers delivering the scheme, it’s the government financing the operation. But why?

Well, with rising energy prices and the government’s promise to reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050, it makes sense that the government would want to improve the energy performance certificate (EPC) ratings of the poorest performing houses in the UK. This means more manageable bills for households and fewer carbon emissions, driving them further towards their legally binding Net Zero target.

ECO4 At EON Energy Explained

ECO4 – the government’s fourth iteration of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme – is designed to support low income households living in poor performing houses in terms of their energy efficiency. It offers a range of methods to help reduce energy bills and improve EPC ratings, but one of those methods is a new boiler upgrade to a system with improved efficiency.

By replacing older boilers with A grade combi boilers, the heating in your home will be on for a much shorter time, as they’re far more efficient and can heat up a home quicker and keep it at temperature for longer.

In order to qualify through EON Energy, you’ll need to first be a customer, and second meet the eligibility criteria of ECO4.

ECO4 Eligibility Criteria

You might be eligible for ECO4 support with EON for a free boiler if you meet the following criteria:

  • You’re an EON Energy customer
  • You’re in receipt of an applicable government benefit OR someone in your household/a tenant is OR
    • You receive Child Benefit AND you have a household income below a specific threshold
  • You own/privately rent a home with an EPC rating of D-G

Still unsure? No problem! Simply check with Eco Grants today – it’ll take just 60 seconds to fill out your details and find out if you qualify for any grant or scheme support for an EON free boiler.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) At EON Energy Explained

Unfortunately for those living in Scotland, the BUS scheme is only available in England and Wales, but it’s worth mentioning for those of whom the scheme could work for. If you’re looking for an upgrade from your old boiler with EON, then you might be able to achieve it through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

The BUS aims to upgrade boilers to much greener options though, and an air source or ground source heat pump are the most common options, but you can also upgrade to a biomass boiler through this scheme, too. Although it’s important to note that biomass boilers aren’t right for everybody.

The scheme will offer £5,000 towards the cost of a heat pump or biomass boiler, although it’s likely you’ll still have to contribute to the cost of the installation, as often £5,000 won’t cover the full cost (though it may in some cases). But first, you’ll need to check if you’re eligible for support.

BUS Eligibility Criteria

In order to qualify for BUS support through EON Energy, you’ll need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be an EON Energy customer
  • Have an old boiler that runs on fossil fuels (such as oil-fired boilers)
  • Live in an energy inefficient home with high energy bills and poor EPC ratings
  • Be considered a low income household

If you’re unsure if you qualify, you can check with Eco Grants in just 60 seconds.

Biomass Boiler Aren’t For Everyone

Not only might a biomass boiler not be right for your home because of personal preferences, but your home might not be right for it in terms of its location. You see, biomass boilers need to be installed in rural homes that aren’t connected to the grid in traditional ways in order to be considered an appropriate installation.

This will apply to very few people. But just because your home isn’t right for a biomass boiler, doesn’t mean BUS can’t help you. You might consider an air source heat pump or ground source heat pump instead, but again, this might not be something you’re looking for. In that case, ECO4 support might be best for you.

EON Free Boiler FAQs:

The Affordable Warmth Scheme was another government-led scheme that EON Energy were a part of that covered the cost of a boiler installation up to £7,500. Unfortunately this scheme has now closed, but there are still other ways to receive an EON free boiler such as through ECO4 or BUS.

That depends on how much support you’re awarded. Even if you qualify for grant support you may not be awarded an amount that covers the full cost of the installation. If this is the case, you may have to contribute towards the cost of your new boiler, although it will be at a greatly reduced price.
