What Is The British Gas Free Boiler Scheme?
A name like ‘British Gas Free Boiler Scheme’ seems to suggest two things:
- British Gas have a boiler scheme that they’ve created and operate themselves
- That you’ll be able to get a completely free new boiler
Neither of these is strictly true. What we mean to say is, the British Gas Free Boiler Scheme actually refers to two separate, wider schemes that you can access as a British Gas customer to potentially replace an inefficient boiler: Energy Company Obligation 4 Scheme (ECO4) and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).
You also might not get a completely free boiler (although some certainly will), but even if you don’t, you’ll make significant savings with these grant schemes.

ECO4 Explained
ECO4 is a government-led scheme that encourages the largest energy suppliers (such as British Gas) to support their customers with the lowest incomes living in properties with the poorest Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings to improve their energy efficiency to reduce household bills and provide them with a more comfortable home to live in.
One way of doing that is replacing old, with A grade combi boilers that are far more energy efficient and effective at heating a home quickly.
ECO4 As Part Of The ‘British Gas Free Boiler Scheme’
ECO4 is just one scheme you can apply to as a British Gas customer. This government-led scheme offers £1000s in support that could mean your boiler is actually free. Not everybody will be entitled to a completely free boiler under ECO4, but significant savings will be made either way.
First, though, you’ll want to make sure you actually qualify for support under ECO4.
ECO4 Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for ECO4 support via British Gas, you’ll need to be a British Gas customer living in a home with an EPC rating of D or below and claiming one of the following benefits:
- Child Benefit (household income specific – check below*)
- Universal Credit
- Child Tax Credits
- Housing Benefit
- Working Tax Credit
- Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance
- Income-Related Employment & Support Allowance
- Pension Credit Savings
- Pension Credit Guarantee
- Income Support
*to qualify for support based on Child Benefit alone, you will need to have a household income below the following thresholds:

| Two-Parent Household | £27,300 | £32,100 | £36,900 | £41,700 |
Boiler Upgrade Scheme Explained
BUS is only available in England and Wales, but it’s still worth considering if you’re a British Gas customer looking for an improved replacement boiler that’s also far greener.
BUS is effectively a boiler replacement scheme and provides upgrades via ground source and air source heat pumps, but also provides funding for biomass boilers. Whilst the scheme is set to end in 2028, you could still see significant savings before that with the scheme offering £5,000 off the cost of biomass boilers, or up to £7,500 funding for heat pumps.
BUS Eligibility Criteria
In order to qualify for BUS support through the British Gas Free Boiler Scheme you’ll need to be a British Gas customer, not have received support through any other grants and schemes such as ECO4, and meet the following criteria:
- Your old boiler is run on fossil fuels
- You live in an energy-inefficient home
- You’re considered a low-income household

A Note On Biomass Boilers
Biomass boilers are not suitable for every home. In fact, they’re mostly only suited to rural homes that aren’t connected to the gas grid in traditional ways. That means the BUS funding for a new boiler will only be relevant to a select few of you.
If you aren’t in a rural location then biomass boilers won’t be suitable for you and the BUS will only be able to offer you air source or ground source heat pumps as an alternative heating system. If you are looking for a replacement boiler – then ECO4 will be the best scheme for you.

Does British Gas operate the free boiler scheme?
The British Gas Free Boiler Scheme is a catch-all term to describe how you, as a British Gas customer, can access funding for a free or partially funded boiler in order to make energy saving improvements to your home heating. The schemes themselves (ECO4 and BUS) are government-led and are only available to those who meet the relevant criteria. While these schemes are trying to steer people in the direction of renewable heating systems such as heat pumps, it may still be possible to get a boiler grant for a new or replacement boiler.
Is the British Gas Free Boiler Scheme a con or genuine?
The scheme is a genuine opportunity for households who are eligible. The government has encouraged energy suppliers to offer support to low income households living in energy inefficient homes to help reduce carbon emissions and energy bills. Through the ECO Scheme and BUS, you can receive support for a new boiler installation.
If the grant you receive (based on your household income and the cost of your boiler upgrade) covers the full cost of installation then you’ll get a new boiler completely free. Sometimes your grant will cover only part of the cost of having a new boiler installed, in which case you’ll have to cover the rest yourself. In some circumstances, ECO$ may cover boiler repairs.
