How Can The Free Boiler Scheme Help Me?

The number one reason anybody would want to upgrade their boiler right now is energy bills. An inefficient boiler means you’ll use more energy in your home to keep it at the temperature you want, and the more energy you use, the more expensive it will be for you. This is especially true if you have an old boiler like oil fired boilers.

Here at ZOA Energy Solutions, we know that even a few £s here and there is a saving worth making, and some predictions actually suggest a new, more efficient boiler could bring down your energy bills by around £300 per year on average – and that’s certainly worth it.

With 0% VAT payable on energy saving measures like this running until March 2027, there’s never been a better time to look into upgrading your to a new boiler.

Why Should I Upgrade My Boiler Now?

  • A more energy efficient boiler = a smaller carbon footprint
  • You’ll be more comfortable in your home
  • Quieter operation because most new boilers are much quieter than older ones
  • More compact size = more space in your home
  • Improved Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating for your home

And, of course, the main appeal, which is that there are free boiler schemes out there waiting for you to take advantage of.

What Are The Different Free Boiler Schemes And Grants Available?

Free boiler schemes and eco grants seem to be ever-changing, but stick with Eco Grants by ZOA Energy Solutions and we’ll keep you up to date with the latest developments so you’ll always know if you qualify or not. Check if you qualify today by filling out a quick form with us, or you can read on below for a comprehensive guide to various free boiler and eco grant schemes:

  • ECO4
  • LA Flex
  • Warm Homes Fund
  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Are Free Boiler Schemes Legitimate?

Absolutely! The majority of the schemes for free boilers we’ll discuss today are government-backed and government-funded. ECO4, LA Flex, and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme are all examples of this. Certain eligibility criteria will need to be met in order to qualify for support, so it isn’t as though free boilers are being promised to every household in the UK.

Warm Homes Fund is slightly different and was created based on a collaboration between Affordable Warmth Solutions, National Grid, and Community Interest Company. Again, the funding available is legitimate and eligibility criteria will apply.

I'm Interested In A Free Boiler Scheme - How Do I Apply?

Your boiler is one of the most important things in your home, and making sure it’s in perfect working order is vital if you want to save money on your energy bills and ensure your home functions exactly as it should. Just because your boiler needs an upgrade doesn’t mean you’ll have to pay. Thanks to a range of free boiler grant schemes and other eco grants, you could have part or all of the cost of your new boiler installation covered.

Want to find out if you qualify? All we’ll need is some basic information about your circumstances to get started. As soon as you fill in our form above, we’ll be able to check which grants and schemes you qualify for and help you with your new boiler installation.

What Is The ECO4 Free Boiler Scheme?

ECO4 isn’t just a free boiler scheme, in fact, it covers a range of eco-home improvements such as insulation and solar panels, too. But this also includes replacement boilers and boiler upgrades.

ECO4 began in April 2022 and will run until the end of March 2026 with multiple phases to the scheme, but it has essentially been created in order to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency throughout homes in the UK. Funding for the UK government’s ECO scheme comes from a number of the main energy suppliers who are obligated to provide funding under the initiative.

How Do I Get A Free Boiler Via ECO4?

Those looking for a free boiler grant in Scotland, a free boiler grant in Wales, or a free boiler in England could potentially access full or partial funding for a free boiler with ECO4 (those looking for a free boiler in Northern Ireland can access the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme – but we won’t cover that today).

You can find out if you’re eligible below, but for now, let’s talk about what ECO4 has to do with boilers at all.

Plenty of houses in the UK rely on a non-condensing boiler to heat their home, which is notorious for their energy inefficiency (compared to more modern boilers) and high carbon emissions. Plenty of other houses in the UK have a boiler that’s past its best, leading to uncomfortable living conditions and higher energy bills, too.

Who Is Eligible For Support Under ECO4?

Not everybody is eligible for a free boiler grant under ECO4, and even if you are eligible, some will only be eligible for partial funding. Exactly how much funding you’ll receive will depend on things like your household income and the eco home improvements you need to make.

That’s because ECO4 aims to provide funding to the lowest income households living in the most energy inefficient homes across the UK. As such, the eligibility criteria reflects this.

To qualify for ECO4 you must meet these requirements:

  • You’re in receipt of government benefits OR someone in your household/a tenant is (you can find a list of applicable government benefits below)
  • You have an inefficient heating system with a rating of D-G
  • You receive child benefit AND your household income is below a specific threshold (more on this later)

List Of Applicable Government Benefits:

  • Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-Related Employment & Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit Guarantee
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Universal Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit Savings

Child Benefit Household Income Thresholds

If you receive child benefits as a single parent OR two-parent household and have a household income below the numbers shown below, then you should qualify for a free or partially funded boiler:

Single Parent Household

  • With 1 child: £19,800
  • With 2 children: £24,600
  • With 3 children: £29,400
  • With 4+ children: £34,200

Two Parent Household

  • With 1 child: £27,300
  • With 2 children: £32,100
  • With 3 children: £36,900
  • With 4+ children: £41,700

Who Offers ECO4 Funding?

ECO actually stands for Energy Company Obligation, so it’s the energy companies that are obligated to fund new or replacement boilers in full or in part. As such, there is funding available from different energy companies, including:

As you can see, the biggest energy companies in the UK are all obligated to be part of the ECO4 scheme and offer funding accordingly. However, even some smaller energy companies have opted into the ECO4 scheme of their own accord, so it’s worth checking with your energy company directly if you’re unsure if they’re a part of the scheme.

What Is The LA Flex Scheme?

LA Flex essentially works as ECO4 does, in that it offers partially funded or free boilers and upgrades. The main difference is that the scheme is much more flexible.

LA Flex stands for the Local Authority Flexible Eligibility Scheme, and it falls under ECO4 but it gives local authorities greater flexibility in terms of who actually qualifies for funding.

Essentially, it allows local authorities and councils to offer more targeted support for the most vulnerable households in their area – regardless of if they qualify under ECO4 traditionally.

Who Is Eligible For LA Flex Support For Free Boilers?

With LA Flex you should be living in a home with an energy rating of E, F, or G and:

  • Have an annual household income of less than £31,000, OR
  • Have health problems that may be worsened by living in an energy-inefficient home, such as cardiovascular problems, mobility issues, respiratory issues, or immune-suppressed conditions, OR
  • Meet two of the following criteria:
    • House in LSOA 1-3 Area (recognised as an area of deprivation in the UK)
    • Householder receives Council Tax rebates due to low income
    • Householder is considered vulnerable to living in a cold home according to nationally recognised NICE guidance
    • You have been referred to LA Flex by the Local Authority Delivery (LAD) Scheme due to being vulnerable and in a low-income household
    • Members of the household are in receipt of free school meals
    • Citizens Advice, your energy supplier, or your mortgage lender has advised you to seek help from government schemes due to sustained debt on mortgage payments or utility bills

How Much Could My Old Boiler Be Costing Me?

Before we continue looking at the other grants we’ll cover today, you might be thinking switching to a new boiler is more hassle than it’s worth. But if you take a look at some of the average cost of repairs below, you might have second thoughts and realise just how much more expensive keeping your old boiler could be:

Type Of Boiler Repair

Average Cost Of Repair

Gas Valve Replacement

£200

Pressure Valve

£150

Combustion Fan

£275

Printed Circuit Board

£300

Thermostat

£125

New Boiler Pump

£300

Emergency Call Out Fee

£80

Hourly Rate

£55

The above table is based on UK averages and the most common repairs required – the costs may vary significantly in your area and you may require different repair work, making your repairs even more expensive.

The point is, old boilers are much more likely to break down, and when they do, you could pay a significant fee to have it fixed. So a new, more reliable boiler with the support of eco home improvement grants could certainly be worth your while…

What Is The Warm Homes Fund?

The Warm Homes Fund was established in 2017 by Affordable Warmth Solutions, National Grid, and Community Interest Company, offering £160 million in funding for low-income households with energy-inefficient homes.

As part of the Warm Homes Fund, you could receive a free or partially funded boiler if it’s replacing an inefficient or high carbon emission system, and you’re part of a low-income household.

How Could The Warm Homes Fund Help You Receive a Free Boiler?

The issue with accessing the Warm Homes Fund is that it’s delivered through a variety of schemes, and it can be difficult to know where to look and who to apply with. Connected for Warmth is probably the largest scheme but the Warm Homes Fund themselves admit that they work with over 100 Local Authorities and Registered Social Landlords delivering over 220 programmes – so that’s a lot for any one individual to get their head around.

Work with us, and we take care of all that hard work for you.

Who Is Eligible Under The Warm Homes Fund?

Generally, you’ll be eligible for the Warm Homes Fund if you’re considered a low-income household and you have an energy-inefficient heating system at home that causes higher energy bills and carbon emissions.

Unsure if you qualify? Don’t worry. Work with us today and we’ll be able to tell you which grants and schemes you qualify for, and then we can help you through the process so you get every penny you’re entitled to!

How Can The Boiler Upgrade Scheme Help?

Available in only England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides a grant to help cover part of the cost of replacing fossil fuel heating systems – but here, you would need to upgrade to either a heat pump or biomass boiler

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme began in 2022 and is set to run until 2028, and offers up to £7,500 off the cost of purchasing an alternative form of heating such as a heat pump. The amount was increased in October 2023 from the previous level of support of £5,000. Grants for biomass boilers remain capped at £5,000.

Of course, this isn’t a free boiler scheme, but partial funding may help you afford the new boiler alternative you’ve been looking for – especially if you don’t qualify for a free boiler scheme under ECO4 or LA Flex.

Who Is Eligible For The Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The scheme is open for homeowners in England and Wales, but new build properties are not included in this and homeowners who have already received funding through schemes like ECO4 or other government schemes aren’t eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Again, this scheme is designed to target the lowest income households in the poorest performing homes in terms of energy efficiency.

Free Boiler Scheme FAQs:

Absolutely! There are still plenty of grants and schemes out there that can help you get a free boiler or partially funded boiler, saving you £100s, if not £1000s.

Still unsure if you qualify? Check with us for free today, and it’ll only take you 60 seconds.

Yes! Whilst previous free boiler schemes focussed mostly on benefits, ECO4, LA Flex, the Warm Home Fund, and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme all focus on household incomes and energy efficiency, with a view to replacing inefficient boilers, rather than just using benefits as eligibility criteria.

Getting a free or partially funded boiler couldn’t be easier with Eco Grants and ZOA Energy Solutions. We’ll check all available schemes and grants to see if you’re eligible, and then, if you are, we can help you through the application process AND carry out the installation for you.
