Applying for flat roof insulation grants can be a time-consuming and intimidating process if you don’t really know what you’re doing or where to start. But as experts in the eco home improvement space, we at ZOA Energy Solutions have decided to put together Eco Grants – a helpful way to quickly and efficiently find out if you qualify for specific grants, and now, we’re adding flat roof insulation grants to our repertoire.

Government grants for flat roof insulation are easy enough to understand if you let the experts guide you, so check if you qualify for support with us today. All we need from you is your postcode and a few additional details about any benefits you may receive, and then we’ll be able to assess your eligibility and get back to you ASAP.

By checking your eligibility with us today, you could save £100s on the cost of your flat roof insulation installation, and potentially £100s per year on your energy bills thereafter.

Flat Roof Insulation Explained

A roof is considered ‘flat’ if its pitch is 10 degrees or less. Obviously, with such a small pitch the roof space is unable to accommodate a loft or large enough roof space for traditional insulation to be installed, and that can prove challenging for those looking to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

Thankfully, there is still a way to insulate your property, even with a flat roof. But there are two options to choose from:

  • Cold roof insulation
  • Warm roof insulation

Cold Roof Insulation

Although a much rarer option than its warm roof counterpart, cold roof insulation still has its uses in the UK. Here, insulation is installed between the joists of the roof and a waterproof cover is laid on top. This creates a cold roof, and the waterproof cover is necessary to reduce dampness.

Nowadays, it’s rare to see cold roof insulation as the main form of insulation in a property, but you could still receive flat roof insulation grants for cold roof insulation if you need it to support other insulation you already have to tip your energy efficiency rating into the next category.

Cold roof insulation also requires a ventilation system to be installed to reduce damp buildup in the cold roof, and today it is seen as a more outdated insulation method, so whilst you may receive grants for flat roof insulation for a cold roof, you’re much more likely to receive it for the method below…

Warm Roof Insulation

Warm roof insulation works by attaching insulation above the roof joists, rather than between them, and it’s then covered in a vapour barrier above it, keeping the roof warm, and making it much easier to keep damp problems at bay.

Warm roof insulation is the most common type, and they prove to be especially effective in flat roofs. If you’re looking for flat roof insulation grants, you’ll much more likely receive one for a warm roof insulation installation than a cold one.

Why Bother With Flat Roof Insulation At All?

It can seem counterintuitive at times, to spend money on your home without knowing the full list of advantages and disadvantages that come along with it. That’s why we’ve put together this helpful guide so you can see if flat roof insulation is right for you:

Advantages of flat roof insulation

Disadvantages of flat roof insulation

Better temperature control – keeping your house warm in winter, and cool in summer

Flat roofs can suffer from water leakage – this could damage the insulation

Reduced condensation and damp problems with warm roof insulation

Not all materials used in flat roof insulation have an excellent lifespan

Makes your property more comfortable year round

Maintenance will be required to check the integrity of the insulation from time to time

Reduced energy bills thanks to improved thermal efficiency

Some evidence suggests flat roof insulation protects the roof’s structural integrity

Greener way to live thanks to reduced use of fossil fuel burning heating systems

Reduced noise from outside, making your home a more peaceful place

You may decide flat roof insulation grants aren’t right for you – but perhaps cavity wall insulation grants or underfloor insulation grants will be?

Grants For Flat Roof Insulation: What You Need To Know

Now, if you have a flat roof, then flat roof insulation will almost certainly make a difference to your home – saving you money on your energy bills, improving its overall comfort, and helping reduce the carbon emissions it emits. But can you get a grant for flat roof insulation? Well, you just might be able to…

Since each grant has its own eligibility criteria, though, you’ll have to check out each one below. The main two flat roof insulation grants that concern most people are:

  • The Great British Insulation Scheme
  • ECO4

The Great British Insulation Scheme - Flat Roof Insulation

First off, can you get flat roof insulation with the Great British Insulation Scheme? Yes! But in order to do so, you’ll need to be considered a low income household in Great Britain, living in a poor performing home in terms of energy efficiency – usually determined by an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D-G.

The aim of this scheme is to put responsibility on the biggest energy suppliers (those with 150,000 or more customers) to support their customers in the worst performing homes in terms of high energy bills and high carbon emissions. The scheme offers government grants for all kinds of insulation, including flat roof, as part of the UK government’s aim to reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050.

£1 billion of support is on offer from summer 2023 until the end of March 2026.

Am I Eligible?

You should qualify for flat roof insulation grants under the Great British Insulation Scheme, if you:

  • Live in a home with an EPC rating of D-G, AND
  • Live in a council tax band A-D in England, A-E in Scotland & Wales

This qualifies you for the general group

To qualify for the low-income group, you’ll need to be:

  • Receiving means tested benefits AND
  • Living in a home with an EPC rating of D-G

ECO4 - Flat Roof Insulation

Again, ECO4 targets low income households with poor energy efficiency homes, but this time targets the whole of the UK. And, again, its aim is to reduce carbon emissions and energy bills and improve UK homes with a range of eco home improvements, including flat roof insulation where applicable.

Am I Eligible?

You’ll likely qualify for government grants for flat roof insulation under ECO4 if you’re:

  • In receipt of government benefits (or somebody in your household/a tenant is)
  • Living in a home with a D-G EPC rating
  • Receiving child benefit with a household income below a specific threshold

  • Income-Related Employment & Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit Guarantee
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Universal Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit Savings

I Receive Child Benefit - What Are The Household Income Rules For ECO4 Support?

Below are the annual income thresholds for support through ECO4 whilst receiving child benefit. If you have a household income below the numbers below, then you may qualify so long as you live in a home with a D-G EPC rating.

Single parent households:

  • 1 child: £19,800
  • 2 children: £24,600
  • 3 children: £29,400

0% VAT On Insulation & How It Helps

This is automatically applied on any qualifying purchase, so you don’t have to apply through a scheme or anything – you just get to enjoy cheaper cavity wall insulation, which will help stretch those government grants even further.

Grants For Flat Roof Insulation FAQs:

Absolutely! The more insulation your home has the better it will perform in terms of energy efficiency, and that means lower energy bills each month, and fewer carbon emissions from your home. If you want a more comfortable home to live in, then flat roof insulation can help you there.

That depends on your circumstances. Some people will receive a grant that covers the full cost of installation, essentially making your flat roof insulation free. Others will receive a grant to cover part of the installation, and the rest will be paid out of pocket.
