Understanding Free First Time Central Heating Grants
Free central heating grants aim to provide eligible households with the installation of an energy efficient central heating system, often at no cost to them. The scheme is designed to help those who may struggle to afford to install a central heating system on their own and who have never had central heating installed in their property before..
The funding covers the cost of installation, with the installers paid directly. This ensures that qualifying households will usually pay nothing out of their own pockets. In some instances central heating grants may extend to both new installations and repairs or upgrades to existing systems.
Types of First-Time Central Heating Grants
First Time Central Heating (Gas) System Grants:
These grants cover the complete installation of a new gas central heating system, which includes the boiler, radiators, and necessary controls. Under ECO4, it is applicable to properties that had a main gas connection and gas meter prior to 31 March 2022 (the date when ECO3 ended).
First Time Central Heating (Heat Pump) Grants:
This offers heat pump installations to homes that did not have a main gas supply prior to the cut off date of 31 March 2022. This is a significant change from ECO3 and means that homes that never had a central heating system (or main gas supply) would be likely to qualify for a heat pump installation including radiators rather than a gas boiler.
Key Aspects of Free Central Heating Grants
Several important features define these free central heating schemes:
Eligibility Criteria: | These schemes are typically available only to households that meet specific eligibility requirements, often based on income or existing heating setups. |

Who Qualifies for the Central Heating Grant?
To qualify for the grant, your property must either lack a heating system or have one that doesn’t include a boiler and radiators.
For your application to be approved, someone residing at the property must receive one or more of the eligible state benefits, such as child benefits or universal credit.
A full list of these qualifying benefits is typically provided on our application form. In certain circumstances, there may be exceptions to this requirement if the household meets the criteria under the ECO flex rules.
To be eligible for a central heating grant you must meet the following criteria:
- Receipt of State Benefits: Someone living in the household must receive one or more qualifying state benefits, such as child benefits or universal credit. A full list of qualifying benefits is usually provided in the application form.
- Home Ownership: You must own your home, or if you are a private tenant, you must have permission from your landlord.
- Gas Supply: Your property must have been connected to a gas supply prior to the cut off date of 31 March 2022. If not you will not be eligible for a gas boiler but will be offered a heat pump alternative instead.
Government Benefits That Qualify You for the Grant
If you or someone in your household receives any of the following government benefits, you may qualify for the central heating grant:
- Child Benefit*
- Child Tax Credit
- Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance
- Income-Related Employment Support Allowance
- Income Support
- Pension Guarantee Credit
- Universal Credit
- Working Tax Credit
*Note: Specific income requirements apply for those receiving child benefits, which are detailed in the income threshold table below.
| Number of Children | Single Claimant | Couple |
| 1 | £19,900 | £27,500 |
| 2 | £24,800 | £32,300 |
| 3 | £29,600 | £37,200 |
| 4+ | £34,500 | £42,000 |
If you receive pension credits or child tax credits with an annual household income of less than £16,010, you automatically qualify for a central heating grant under the Affordable Warmth Scheme.
In some cases, due to funding restrictions within the Affordable Warmth Scheme, certain households may be required to contribute towards the cost of a new central heating system.
For those receiving child tax credits, working tax credits, or universal credits, eligibility is determined based on household income thresholds, which consider the number of bedrooms and the number of adults and children living in the home.
The ECO scheme also plays a role in determining whether homeowners should receive a replacement central heating system. If your home already has a boiler and central heating system, and the boiler is more than five years old, you may qualify for a free replacement. However, if the boiler is less than five years old, it is generally considered more cost-effective to repair rather than replace it.
Should You Apply for a Central Heating Grant?
If you meet the criteria mentioned earlier, it’s worth considering applying for a first-time central heating grant. These grants are designed for households facing issues with the cost of heating their home due to the use of an energy-inefficient heating system.
By taking advantage of this scheme, you can invest in green home improvements and install a reliable central heating system. This ensures your home stays warm during winter while also enhancing your quality of life. If you don’t qualify for a first-time central heating grant, other options could be available, including low-interest financing for a new central heating system.

First Time Central Heating Grants FAQs
What are central heating grants for over 60s?
Central heating grants are also available for individuals over 60, including homeowners, private tenants, and landlords. These grants are part of the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) scheme, a government-backed initiative.
In many cases, the scheme covers the full cost of the work, and there is no need to repay the grant. However, in some situations, a small contribution may be required. If you meet the criteria for the ECO scheme, ZOA Energy can arrange a free, no-obligation survey from an approved ECO installer in your area.
What is the ECO Initiative?
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) initiative was established by the government to ensure that major energy suppliers in the UK provide free insulation for cavity walls and lofts. The ECO initiative also includes the Affordable Warmth Scheme, which may offer you a central heating grant if you qualify.
The first time central heating grants are part of the government’s broader effort to reduce fuel poverty in the UK.By converting properties from electric or other off-gas heating sources to more energy-efficient heating, these schemes contribute to reducing carbon emissions, supporting the government’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
What are the benefits of a central heating grant?
There are many advantages to taking advantage of the first-time central heating grant. If you currently have no central heating, this grant offers an excellent opportunity to reduce your monthly heating bills.
A central heating system is not only more reliable and efficient but also helps lower carbon emissions. Modern central heating systems are designed to be smart, allowing you to control your heating through an app on your phone or a small electronic device in your home.
